Scholarship Pageant Presented by BB&T

Junior high school students from area high schools compete in this annual Scholarship Pageant based on a private interview with judges, evening gown competition, and on-stage presentation. The winner is the recipient of the Beverly Anne Jurgensen Scholarship Award, named after the beloved Past President of the North Carolina Azalea Festival.
Tickets are available for purchase at the Azalea Festival Ticket Office. Tickets are general admission (no reserved seating). Doors open at 6:30 pm; with the inner doors to the auditorium opening at approximately 7:00 pm.

Emma Grace Wright, a junior from Coastal Christian High School, was crowned the 2017 North Carolina Azalea Festival Princess during the 69th Annual North Carolina Azalea Festival Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, March 4th. The event was held at Kenan Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Emma Grace is the daughter of Ben and Amy Wright. She and her court were selected from among 21 contestants representing 8 area high schools. The court members include the following: 1st Runner-Up from John T. Hoggard High School, Emilia Torello, 2nd Runner-Up, from John T. Hoggard High School, Katie Gregory, 3rd Runner-Up, from E.A. Laney High School, Carli Batson, and 4th Runner-Up, from E.A. Laney High School, Emma Kohlenberg.
At Coastal Christian, Emma Grace is on the Varsity Cheerleading squad, is a member of the Beta Club and she helped establish North Carolina’s first high school Best Buddies chapter and serves as Vice President. The older sister of two younger siblings with Downs Syndrome, Emma Grace has spent a large portion of her life participating in activities and working with organizations that center around people with intellectual disabilities. She also enjoys and blogging and creating multimedia projects that inspire people. Her greatest honor thus far, has been being selected as one of Maria Shriver’s Architects of Change.
