Scholarship Pageant Presented by BB&T

Junior high school students from area high schools compete in this annual Scholarship Pageant based on a private interview with judges, evening gown competition, and on-stage presentation. The winner is the recipient of the Beverly Anne Jurgensen Scholarship Award, named after the beloved Past President of the North Carolina Azalea Festival.

Grace Tippett, a junior from New Hanover High School, was crowned the 2018 North Carolina Azalea Festival Princess during the 70th Annual North Carolina Azalea Festival Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, March 3rd. The event was held at Kenan Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Grace is the daughter of Jeff and Kinzy Tippett. She and her court were selected from among 22 contestants representing 7 area high schools, as well as the Home School Community. The court members include the following: 1st Runner-Up from Coastal Christian High School, Claudia Webb, 2nd Runner-Up, from Isaac Bear Early College, Jamie Barricelli, 3rd Runner-Up, also from New Hanover High School, Reagan Radford, and 4th Runner-Up, from the Home School Community, Caroline Shaver.
At New Hanover, Grace is in the Lyceum Academy. She is also involved with yearbook, Beta Club, Key Club and Varsity Cheerleading. Outside of school, she is a competitive dancer with FoxTroupe Dancers at South East Dance Academy, and she enjoys being an assistant dance teacher at DREAMS of Wilmington. Aside from dance, Grace also enjoys fashion and writing. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to pursue a major in multimedia journalism. After college, she hopes to impact her community by writing for a fashion magazine or news publication.
