Our 2026 Festival Artist, Elizabeth Sheats, is a lifelong Wilmingtonian who finds inspiration right here at home. Growing up on tree-lined streets, she remembers the first time she saw the canopy above her through new prescription glasses. The detail and beauty truly took her breath away.

Her signature tree canopy paintings began with a watercolor of Federal Road at Bald Head Island. After seeing how people connected with her work, she began painting on watercolor canvas panels with a waxed finish instead of glass. Over time, she transitioned to using matte acrylics, sometimes layered over watercolor, to bring even more depth and light to her pieces.

For Elizabeth, the tree canopy has become a symbol of hope and a reminder to always look toward the light at the end of the tunnel. Her work encourages us to find comfort, strength, and beauty even in the shadows.

We are honored to showcase Elizabeth’s art as part of the 2026 North Carolina Azalea Festival. 🌸
